In 1853, the Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer was founded at Geislingen (Steige), which in 1880 merged with the Metallwarenfabrik A. Ritter & Co.,Esslingen, to form a joint-stock company under the name of Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik. By the turn of the century the undertaking, with its extensive programme of table, kitchen and household products, had already become acknowledged as the “largest establishment of its kind”. WMF’s competence in the field of table and kitchenware for both the private and commercial sectors has been steadily developed up to the present day.
A demanding public has combined the name WMF with an image of beautiful and high-quality products: cutlery and tableware, functional cookware, and sophisticated gift articles. The registered trademark Cromargan® has enjoyed an almost equally high reputation for table and kitchenware of top-quality stainless steel 18/10 since its introduction in 1927. In view of the fact that WMF was the first company to produce household utensils made of 18/10 stainless steel, it is not without reason that the word Cromargan® is frequently used as a synonym for stainless steel of the highest quality.
The enormous variety of products and the multitude of customers necessitate a highly developed intuition for coming trends and constant adjustment to changing markets. In cooperation with well-known national and international designers, aesthetically appealing products are continually being created, which are enjoying ever increasing appreciation by a world-wide public.
